Subject: Fascinating Collection of Hollywood Profiles, circa 1948
Much Hollywood writing back in the classic era falls into unsatisfactory categories -- it is either press agent fluff, toxic fluff of the Hedda Hopper
...
variety, criticism very much in thrall to the left wing fantasies of the day. These writings, produced by the Saturday Evening Post's wrtiter on matters cinema, surprise, because they are well written, they take on subjects that are a bit off the beaten path (Francis X Bushman? The King Brothers?) and show a appreciation for talent that still looks good today. (The film director he chooses to feature is Michael Curtiz -- not an obvious choice either back then or today. And the auteurists couls learn something from the assessment.) The Dan Duryea asessment is priceless . The articles on the rise of Burt Lancaster and Gregory Peck are also worth sampling.
